- Larvae of Sawfly - Birch Leaf Miner burrows into birch leaves in search of nutrients
- Makes tree susceptible to further disease
- Prefers leaves of newly formed shoots
- Small brown or red-brown irregular patches on leaves which may begin to curl indicate the presence of the Birch Leaf Miner
- Adults emerge in spring laying eggs on newly forming leaves, hatching in 10 - 14 days
- Feed on leaves for 8 - 12 days
- Mature larvae drop to the ground to form a cocoon in the soil with the adult emerging in 1 - 2 weeks
- Can have 1 - 4 generations per year with final generation overwintering in soil cocoons with cycle restarting in spring
- 2 spray applications are done in the spring and July
- Applications should be done yearly
